Event Selection I

by Beatrice Rainone

NEXT UP is the column curated by Beatrice Rainone, dedicated to a critical selection of the most significant initiatives that address the new themes and languages with which contemporary art confronts digital culture.

Nexaris Suite
Agnes Questionmark
23.11.2024 – 13.04.2025

Tenuta dello scompiglio, Capannori (LU)

Agnes Questionmark takes us into a future where the body becomes fluid, hybrid, even reversible. The installation defines a hyper-tech surgical room, where patients, scanned like Amazon packages, are reduced to data under the implacable eye of the doctor. But the artist reverses the situation: what if it was the patient, with his gaze, who took control? Here the eyes, symbol of resistance, become the protagonists of a disturbing clash between the watcher and the watched. Who is really in charge, the surgeon with the scalpel or those who dare to rebel? Are we ready to imagine a body finally free of control and judgement?

Living in the (Un)real
Hsin-Chien Huang
14.11.2024 – 19.01.2025

MEET|Digital Culture Center, Milan

Living in the (Un)Real by Hsin-Chien Huang is a crazy immersion between virtual reality, surveillance and a bit of digital chaos. Until 19 January 2025, visitors can reincarnate into new bodies with Samsara, exploring the cycle of life, death and rebirth in a post-apocalyptic world. In Bodyless, Huang invites visitors to dive into his childhood memories, a bit like going to therapy, but the psychotherapist is Winston Orwell. The installations in the exhibition offer unique experiences: Shall We Dance, Milan? invites you to dance with the buildings of Milan, creating a link between body and architecture. Omni Channels, reflects on how privacy is now an artistic commodity, while The Eye and I takes visitors on a journey through the ages of surveillance, all accompanied by Jean-Michel Jarre’s epic soundtrack. Ready to be watched?

FOTONICA
13-21.12.2024

Accademia d’Ungheria, Chromosphere Dome, Roma

Rome lights up – literally – with the eighth edition of Fotonica, the festival celebrating audio-visual digital art in two extraordinary locations: the Hungarian Academy and the futuristic immersive Chromosphere Dome. During the day, the Dome is transformed into an atmospheric venue for children’s activities, while in the afternoon and evening there are ‘special effects’ for adults: audiovisual shows, videomapping that transforms the exterior of the dome into a work of art, and installations that stimulate the senses and imagination. The Sphere in Las Vegas, watch and learn! It all revolves around the photon, the particle that makes up light and enables vision through interaction with the retina. Between immersive installations and innovative sounds, the Roman night promises to be truly dazzling!
